Updated August 31, 2026. This guide replaces our older 2024 seasonal article. It is general planning information, not a live forecast or clearance to sail.
Planning a yacht charter in Puerto Vallarta during hurricane season starts with flexibility. Choose a boat and an itinerary you like, but confirm the weather, operating conditions and booking terms before your departure.
When is hurricane season in Puerto Vallarta?
Puerto Vallarta is on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The eastern Pacific hurricane season officially runs from May 15 through November 30, although tropical cyclones can form outside those dates. The National Hurricane Center’s seasonal guidance explains the regional calendar. Those dates do not predict conditions for a particular day in Banderas Bay.
Check the forecast before a boat trip
Use current information from Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional and official local notices. Check again close to departure and ask the charter team how the forecast affects your proposed route. Follow the captain’s instructions and any restrictions issued by the local authorities.
Thunderstorms can develop quickly and bring dangerous wind, waves and lightning. The National Weather Service’s boating guidance recommends staying ashore when thunderstorms are possible. Watching lightning from a yacht is not a safe activity to plan. Do not treat a bay location, a calm photograph or an old weather article as evidence that conditions are safe.
Questions to ask before paying a deposit
- Who confirms whether the charter can operate, and when will you receive that decision?
- What happens if weather or a port restriction prevents departure?
- What are the written cancellation, rescheduling and refund terms for your particular boat?
- Could the departure time, route or planned activities change?
- Which marina is the meeting point, and how will the team contact you if plans change?
Confirm these details for the boat you are booking. This guide does not promise a particular refund, replacement trip or weather guarantee. Keep the agreed terms with your booking confirmation and leave room in your travel schedule for a change of plan.
